WIMBERLEY — Wesley Lambert was named as the new athletic director and Wimberley High School's head football coach, following Doug Warren’s retirement announcement earlier this spring.
The Wimberley ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the hire of Lambert to his new position at its May 19 meeting. Lambert has been with the school district since 2011 and has been the defensive coordinator for the Texans the past eight seasons.
“We are very fortunate to have an internal candidate of Wesley Lambert’s caliber to promote to our WISD athletic director [and] head football coach position,” said WISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Bonewald. “Coach Lambert has a proven track-record of success throughout his career. He takes great pride and sincere interest in supporting both the athletic and the personal development of the student-athletes he coaches. As a long-time geometry teacher, coach Lambert also deeply values the importance of the academic success of our students. He is highly invested in our Wimberley community and understands the important role our athletic program plays in teaching important character traits like work ethic, the value of being a contributing member of a team, and perseverance when faced with challenges. We look forward to many years of success for our Wimberley Texans and Lady Texans under his leadership.”
During his time with the Texans, Lambert has been a part of a coaching staff that has led Texan teams to one state championship, two state finals and four other state semifinals appearances. He has twice been named a 4A-Region 8 Texas High School Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year for 2024 and 2025.
In addition to his duties in football, Lambert has spent 14 years coaching long and triple jumpers in track and field; Texan jumpers have won two golds, one silver and three bronze medals at the state track and field meet under Lambert’s time as a coach, stated a WISD news release.
“New role, same passion,” said Lambert. “I’m honored to continue to serve the Wimberley community and the Wimberley ISD athletic program as the new athletic director and head football coach. I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep pouring into our kids and building champions on and off the field. Texan Pride!”
Lambert graduated from Ganado High School and then, was a four-year letterman in football at Angelo State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He and his wife Lacey, a WHS graduate who is also a teacher/coach at WHS, have four children who attend Wimberley schools.
