PAWS Shelter to keep doors open at Kyle facility

KYLE — PAWS Shelter of Central Texas, located in Kyle, will be able to continue serving its community on a month-by-month basis, due to the support of residents.

On Oct. 13, PAWS took to social media to announce that the Kyle campus would be temporarily shutting its doors Oct. 31.

“The reason is one that many other organizations and people are experiencing right now: the weight of this economy. Running a shelter is extremely expensive. From providing our animals the vet care they need, to food and supplies, to things that most people don’t think of like heating and air conditioning, it all adds up. For now, we can no longer afford to keep our doors open at both locations,” read the post.

PAWS has been operating its Kyle location since 1986 and serves as a no-kill shelter for Hays County. A second campus, located in Dripping Springs, came to fruition in 2019. Although the nonprofit did not specify why it chose to close the Kyle location, it did note that all unadopted animals prior to Oct. 31 would be moved to the Dripping Springs campus.

Since then, the community has banded together to raise more than $66,000 of the nonprofit's $200,000 goal, which the post claimed would allow the facility to stay open for a few additional months.

“While we had originally planned to close our doors on October 31st, your overwhelming support and generosity have inspired our board to keep the Kyle Campus open on a month-to-month basis. Because of you, we get to continue saving lives,” emphasized PAWS.

Despite the encouraging news, the nonprofit stated that funding must continue in order to move forward with operations throughout the coming months.
