GEORGETOWN —The Wimberley High School Lady Texans soccer team claimed the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 4A Division II State Champion title after defeating the Sunnyvale High School Lady Raiders Thursday, April 9.
The Lady Texans traveled to Birkelbach Stadium in Georgetown last week for another opportunity to capture the state title. After falling to Amarillo's Canyon High School in the 2025 state final, Wimberley returned this season with a clear purpose and determination to bring the championship trophy home.
Standing in their way was another formidable opponent, the Sunnyvale Lady Raiders, who entered the championship match with a 24-3-1 record.
After a hard-fought defensive battle in the opening half, Wimberley’s Emma Durkin found the back of the net to give the Lady Texans a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Following the break, Wimberley head coach Eric Nichols made key adjustments and the Lady Texans responded. Abby Durkin extended the lead with a goal at the 25-minute mark of the second half, putting Wimberley ahead 2-0.
Sunnyvale answered with renewed energy and cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 15-minute mark, but Wimberley refused to let momentum shift. The Lady Texans continued to apply offensive pressure and Lili Sandoval added another goal at the 11-minute mark to give Wimberley a 3-1 advantage.
From there, the Lady Texans’ defensive backline stood firm, limiting the Lady Raiders’ chances and preserving the lead until the final whistle.
When the match ended, Wimberley secured a 3-1 victory and the UIL 4A Division II State Championship, bringing a historic title for the team and school.
After the game, Nichols said he was incredibly proud of his team. He noted that this group had been motivated by last year’s state final loss and was determined not to let the opportunity slip away this time. He added that many of these players began their journey together four years ago and to finish it with a state championship made the moment even more meaningful.
