County proclaims ‘Weatherization Day’

Staff report

Citing benefits including preparedness and saving money, the Hays County Commissioners Court on Tuesday declared Oct. 30 “Weatherization Day.”

The proclamation touted the Combined Community Action Inc. Weatherization Program, which provides economic assistance for low income households.

According to the proclamation language, for every $1 investment in the program, more than $4 is returned in energy, health and safety benefits.

The program uses federal, state, local and private funding to provide cost-effective, energy efficient retrofits to homes occupied by low-income families. On average, the retrofitting reduces heating costs by 30%, which saves the average family $283 a year. Retrofitted households also enjoy health and safety benefits including improved air quality. Homes that do not have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors receive them.

“Weatherization is critical amidst the COVID pandemic because it makes indoor environments healthier, safer and more comfortable for medically vulnerable individuals,” the proclamation says.

It also notes that “in recent years the cumulative total of federal expenditures for Hays County is $27.034 and has assisted 30 homes located in Kyle, San Marcos and Niederwald.
