A 15-year-old boy is being held for the shooting death of a 19-year-old graduate of Hays High School.
Kyle police found the body of Christopher Trevino inside a residence on Dusky Thrush Drive around 1:50 a.m. Saturday when responding to a call of shots fired.
The suspect had fled but was later located at an apartment complex.
Police said the suspect had gone to the residence to buy marijuana from one of Trevino’s family members, but pulled a gun during the transaction. Trevino was reportedly shot when he tried to intervene. The suspect was taken to the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center and faces charges including murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence, deadly conduct, unlawful carry of a weapon and iIllegal discharge of a firearm.
Hays CISD spokesman Tim Savoy said the district learned of Trevino’s death Monday morning.
“Anytime there is a loss of life of such a young person, it is a tragedy. It is particularly heartbreaking when it happens during the holiday season,” the district said in a statement.
Savoy said the district will assist law enforcement if requested, and that despite the winter break, counseling is available to students through the district’s app or by visiting www.hayscisd.net/hopeline.
“Anyone with information regarding the crime should contact the Kyle Police Department. Hays High School and the district are keeping Christopher’s family in our hearts and in our prayers,” he said.
No other information about the suspect will be released because he is a juvenile. Trevino graduated from Hays High School in 2019.
