Staff Report
Beginning Monday, Stage 1 water restrictions will go into effect for those who get their water from Buda’s municipal system.
Weeks of no consistent rainfall and higher than normal demands prompted the measure, officials said.
Watering with a handheld or soaker hose or handheld bucket or drip irrigation system is allowed at any time. However, doing so with a sprinkler attached to a hose or automatic sprinkler system is limited to between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. twice a week:
• Odd-numbered residences are allowed to water on Wednesdays and Saturdays; even-numbered residences on Thursdays and Sundays. Commercial, mixed use and multi-family properties have designated days of Tuesdays and Fridays.
Although twice weekly is allowed, limiting watering to once a week i recommended, the city of Buda said.
Vegetable gardens may be watered anytime with a handheld bucket or hose or drip irrigation can be done at any time. Irrigation to protect trees is allowed with a soaker hose automatic bubbler, tree watering bag or similar device placed within the tree’s dripline.
Commercial nurseries are subject to the same time restrictions when using an automatic irrigation system.
It’s also allowable to water foundations at any time. However, “saturation to the point it causes pooling in the yard or runoff is prohibited.” Swimming pools may operate and be filled as normal. However, covering when not in use is suggested to minimize evaporation. Non recirculating water features are prohibited, as is washing of impervious surface unless required for health and safety.
Violations are punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 per offense and a surcharge on the customer’s utility bill.
