After a threat discovered on social media was found to be unrelated to Hays CISD schools, district officials are encouraging parents and students to remain vigilant.

On Thursday, Hays High students reported seeing a post on Snapchat showing two guns in a backpack or satchel with the words, "ready for school tomorrow."

The post was referencing the National School Walkout to protest gun violence scheduled for April 20, said Tim Savoy, Hays CISD public information officer.

School Resource Officers (SROs) immediately looked into the post, and determined the post did not involve any Hays High or Hays CISD students, Savoy said.

However, Savoy said social media pranksters have edited screenshots of the original post to make it look like it references Hays High School specifically.

“Those people doing that need to realize it’s not funny,” Savoy said. “It’s not a hoax, it’s a crime. There’s a lot of law enforcement resources that go into investigating them, and we take everyone seriously.”

Savoy said he was pleased that several students reported the post, including through the district’s Hays Hopeline, a confidential line students and parents can use to alert district officials of bullying, harassment or other crises.
