‘Chispas’ is the Spanish word for ‘sparks.’ Here are some things that have sparked us this week!

Waffle House coming to Kyle

A new Waffle House restaurant will be opening in Kyle following approval by the planning and zoning commission on June 14. The iconic waffle-centric eatery will be constructed at 5767 Kyle Parkway after it receives building and development permits, and will feature a plethora of waffles alongside its other staples.

Students graduate from Kyle Fire Academy

11 Delta Class cadets from Hays, Lehman and Johnson High Schools graduated from the Hays CISD Kyle Fire Academy on June 13. All 11 passed the fire portion of the academy and have begun taking their TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) exams. Special honors were awarded to valedictorian Amber Sahley; Annelise Seyfried, The Hammer; Kolbe Ashley, Most Physically Fit; and Benjamin Herrera, Most Improved.

Students begin the two year program during their junior year of high school. Their first three semesters consist of Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazmat Ops & Awareness courses, with their final semester being an EMT course.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take their certifying examinations to become fully certified firefighters and EMTs and start careers right out of high school. The program is run by personnel from Kyle Fire Department and includes instructors from other surrounding fire and EMS agencies.

The program is recognized by TCFP and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and covers all of the exact same materials and skills as any other fire academy and EMT program in the state.

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter has extended its $22 adoption special until further notice, giving extra time for those seeking to adopt a great companion for a great price. The $22 fee covers all ready-to-go pets, which are cats and dogs that have already been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and examined by a veterinarian. SMRAS is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Wimberley senior and Star Trek lover

Alexis Pointe, a senior living community in Wimberley, has welcomed new resident Tess Wilson — who also happens to be a big fan of Star Trek.

Wilson’s love for Star Trek began many years ago when she started watching in 1968. She’s since collected all of the books — her favorite is Ishmael — and has watched all of the reruns and movies, too. Her late husband Clyde even once ordered her a foot-long model of the Starship Enterprise and built it for her.

Wilson noted that Star Trek helped create more of an interest in NASA and putting man on the moon, and said she does believe in extraterrestrial life outside of our galaxy.

“Tess has already been such a help to this community, and makes friends everywhere she goes,” said Katy Starr, Alexis Pointe Community Relations Director. “We are so glad she has joined our Alexis Pointe family.”
