Following a 1-9 campaign in 2017, the Lehman Lobos football team will aim for improvement during the summer months.

Helping that cause will be a cavalcade of young athletes that return from last season’s roster, eager to step into larger roles on the field. One of those is junior running back Diego Romero, who is one of several cogs on the Lobo offense that could complement a speedy Lobo backfield

“I’m very excited about Coach Salmon. He completely changed our mindset to never stop. Just keep going, stay motivated, and never give up.”

–Diego Romero, junior runningback

Romero played at the varsity level for the first time last year as a sophomore. He quickly established himself as a weapon out of the backfield and displayed impressive speed and cutting ability. Romero finished his varsity debut campaign with 355 yards rushing on 86 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Two of those rushes went for touchdowns. Diego also showed the ability to make plays as a receiver out of the backfield, hauling in 11 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Diego’s best performance in 2017 came in week one in the Lobos’ game against Westwood. Romero ran for 98 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Diego also caught his lone receiving touchdown of the season in the loss.

When looking back at last season, Diego knows he can do more in 2018. He wants to be more of a leader in 2018.

“I need to push my guys. Make sure they are doing what they need to be doing. I want to become a good leader for my teammates,” Romero said.

Providing guidance for Romero and other returning starters is recently hired head coach Bruce Salmon, who will be taking over the reins for the first time this fall.

Romero held a positive view of his new head coach.

“I’m very excited about Coach Salmon” Romero said. “He completely changed our mindset to never stop. Just keep going, stay motivated, and never give up.”

Making history and playing a role in helping Lobo football reach the postseason for the first time is a goal Romero has set for the season. He also hopes to take the season “one game at a time.”

“We need to keep pushing each other in order to make our goals possible,” Romero said.

Diego and the Lehman Lobos will start fall camp Aug. 6, and their season kicks off Aug. 31 against New Braunfels Canyon.
