Four area teenagers were arrested after leading the Kyle and San Marcos police departments on a miles long chase in a stolen vehicle, according to a press release.
The teens, all minors, were not identified by police, but were taken into custody and placed in the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center.
At approximately 8 p.m. May 7, the San Marcos Police Department was called to assist Kyle Police in initiating a traffic stop on a white Toyota Tacoma that had been reported stolen from the Austin area.
As Kyle Police attempted to make a stop near the 204 mile marker on Interstate 35, the driver of the vehicle “elected not to stop” and evaded authorities “at a high rate of speed,” according to the release.
San Marcos police units joined the pursuit as the vehicle exited I-35 at McCarty Lane in San Marcos. The vehicle then proceeded to take a Texas Turnaround onto the northbound access road “reaching high speeds” before turning onto Wonder World Drive.
The vehicle passed under the State Highway 123 overpass and continued onto Redwood Road in San Marcos, and made a turn onto FM 1979 before heading back toward Interstate 35.
San Marcos officers, who were staged at SH 123 and Redwood Road, had set up with spike strips, but were unable to deploy them due to the closeness of pursuit vehicles, according to the release.
At that point a San Marcos Police Ford Explorer executed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) on the vehicle, which caused the driver to stop on the I-35 northbound access road near SH 123. A PIT is used to force a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways by bumping it from the side near the rear wheel, causing the vehicle to spin out and temporarily stalling the engine. The maneuver is primarily used by authorities to bring vehicle chases to an end.
Authorities then performed a “high risk” stop before the teens were taken into custody by Kyle Police.
No one was hurt as a result of the incident.
