Everyone has a role in creating safe homes
The following article is the first installment of a four-week series focusing on raising awareness about domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we hope to educate our community on this very important issue. In our communities, the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center has been serving victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and child abuse since 1978. Last year, HCWC served 2,269 victims of abuse (face-to-face) primarily from Hays and Caldwell counties. 978 of those were victims of domestic violence.

Escaped convict turns over a new leaf
After Joe Horner’s battle with the buffalo soldiers on Oct. 11, 1874, the wild young outlaw seemed headed for an early grave. Who could have imagined that half a century later he would be the guest of honor at a state funeral in Oklahoma?

You will never get these days back
'One day, you're 17 and you're planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.' - John Green ——— I talk to my mom on the phone almost every day. We talk about how our day went, funny stories about her students, what’s for dinner at our houses, something that my beagle Finn did that day and when the next season of “Virgin River” is supposed to come out because we were left on a cliffhanger.

Wizards raise funds for veterans
BUDA — “Imagine a wizard buying a rusty old car and telling his wife all he wanted to do with it was take it apart to see how it worked, while really he was enchanting it to make it fly.” - Molly Weasley, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” ——— Perhaps you thought the flying Ford Anglia was truly lost in the Forbidden Forest after Ron and Harry scarcely made it to Hogwarts. Nevertheless, Hats Off For Veterans put this theory to rest by revealing the very same car at its fundraiser this past weekend. For one day, from 1-9 p.m. on Oct. 8, community members — wizards and muggles alike — were able to visit and take photos with the iconic blue 1966 Ford Anglia.
