Now’s not the time to discover a new interesting plant on undeveloped land and obtain it for your property thinking it will be drought resistant. No, not this year.
Sunday before last, getting out of the car across from Fellowship Church, my shoe almost crushed an interesting plant sprawling just above the ground with little rose-like yellow flowers.
Gary White and Ron’s best friend from childhood provided the identity when I posted the photo on Facebook. It’s common silverweed.
Many a growing wild plant I’ve brought home, either with roots or as a cutting. But, silverweed would not make it here in a “normal” summer. It requires moist soil and much water.
Gary mentioned some uses for silverweed: “Roots used for making herbal tea to aid in childbirth and to control diarrhea and reject witches spells, leaves and stems not much use…”
The rainfall brought out a pretty little plant with interesting uses whose seeds had probably been lying dormant for many years.
What a blessing the rain!

Most readers receive the Hays Free Press in the mail on Thursday, but the online edition is posted on Wednesday, the day it hits local convenience stores, H-E-Bs and other locations. If you read this by Thursday evening, here’s a reminder of the monthly city council meeting on Thursday night, July 31, at the “new” city hall (the two-story house on the corner of Mountain City Drive and FM 2770). Bids for picking up the tree limbs and branches and logs lining our city’s streets will be opened. By next week, work should commence.
