Staff Report
Where can local shoppers go for the lowest prices on common items? How much is ground beef, eggs, bread and butter? How about lettuce, apples and cheese? What about toilet paper, garbage bags and dog food?
Several reporters checked on the prices of groceries at four different locations in Kyle and Buda: H-E-B Kyle, Target (Kyle), Wal-Mart (Buda) and Dollar General (Kyle). They visited the stores on Oct. 16-17.
They compared brand names where possible, along with store brands and organic labels. Below are the results of their shopping experiment.
Overall, shoppers can walk out of each store paying anywhere from $41.15 (H-E-B) to $46.88 (Target) for the store brand items. Dollar General does not carry lettuce or carrots, so factoring those out, the store appears to have the lowest cost.
