Hays High School’s Vanessa Colunga recently received Hays CISD Board of Trustees’ recognition for her selection to participate in the Perry Initiative. Founded by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jacqueline Perry, the program is designed to attract women into the field of orthopedics and the process includes outreach programs at the nation’s top hospitals. During her upcoming experience with the program, Vanessa, the daughter of Cynthia Colunga, will learn about ways of repairing broken bones, how to install Herring rods for correction of scoliosis, how to suture incisions, how to use a camera for minimally invasive knee surgery, and how to use power tools like a drill and saw. Seen with her HCISD certificate of recognition, Vanessa was joined by her HHS Biomedical Sciences teacher, Kara Hopkins, HHS Principal David Pierce, HCISD Superintendent Mike McKie, and presenting trustee Teresa Tobias.
