John Ellen wins Precinct 5 constable runoff

by Moses Leos III

An Election Day rally by Hays County Precinct No. 5 Constable candidate Mitch Johnson fell short as candidate John Ellen won Tuesday’s runoff election for the Republican nomination for the seat.

Ellen won Tuesday’s runoff with 57.48 percent of the vote, according to unofficial, final election results.

Ellen, who collected 219 of the 381 total ballots cast, led Johnson by a 122-67 margin after early voting results were released.

Johnson rallied on Election Day by collecting 95 votes, but was unable to close the gap on Ellen, who garnered 97 votes.

Ellen wins the Republican nomination for the seat currently held by Pct. 5 Constable Matt Mancillias III, whose re-election bid fell short during the March 1 primary. There were no Democratic candidates who ran during the March 1 primary.

In the runoff for the Pct. 127 Republican primary, Rex Wiegand defeated Damon Fogley by collecting 24 of the 42 total ballots to claim the Reepublican nomination.

Wiegand held a narrow 8-7 lead after early voting results, but pulled away on Election Day by collecting 59 percent of the 27 ballots cast.

According to election results, 1.2 percent of voters in Hays County, or 2,756 of 217,230 Hays County voters, cast ballots in Tuesday’s runoff.
