The Kyle Police Department will move into the building next to City Hall as early as this summer, ahead of the original schedule.
The current tenants at 111 N. Front St. are Hays County government offices. The county planned to remain at the Kyle location until the end of 2012 but recently notified the city of its plans to terminate its lease by the end of April.
The county is building a new facility on FM 2770 with scheduled completion in spring 2013. Temporary offices will be at the new location while the building is under construction.
“We’re targeting the temporary space to be ready later this spring,” said Jennifer Scott, executive assistant to Commissioner Mark Jones.
Several of the county offices in downtown Kyle will move to the temporary, and eventually the permanent, location: the tax assessor’s office, the Precinct 2 commissioner, a Hays County Sheriff’s substation, and the Justice of the Peace. Adult Probation Services moved to the new Hays County Government Center in San Marcos in December.
“We don’t anticipate any lapse in county services because of the move,” Scott said.
The city of Kyle allocated $430,000 for the police department’s move and renovation, including a modular interior system. No changes are planned for the building’s exterior. As noted at a recent city planning workshop, the issue of constructing a new police station in the future is still under consideration.
