Students from Yvonne Schneider’s and Christy Reddish’s six-grade science classes at Barton Middle School received energy audits from PEC.
STAFF REPORTS
At a recent LCRA PowerHouse presentation, sixth-grade students at Barton Elementary School got answers to questions such: Does using a microwave use less energy than an over? (It does.)
What makes a room feel cooler without making an electric bill too high? (That was a trick question, because more than one answer is correct: Using CFL light bulbs which put off less heat that incandescent bulbs. Turning off applicances and televisions that aren’t in use. Closing drapes or blinds. Note, leaving a fan on when no one is around will not cool off the room but it will waste electricity.)
These and other energy-use questions were geared toward helping students use energy more wisely and helping families save money on electric bills.
Students in Yvonne Schneider and Christy Reddish’s science classes also received an energy audit based on answers they provided about home energy use.
As the electricity provider for Hays CISD, Pedernales Electric Cooperative sponsored the PowerHouse event. Over the past 14 years, more than 60,000 middle and elementary students in Texas learned about using energy wisely through the LCRA outreach program.
