WELMA
Thursday Kid wins two awards at Fort Worth Stock Show
Kyle’s own Kameron Welma, 9, took two third place prizes in the miniature horse show in Fort Worth on Jan. 29.
Welma is one of the Thursday Kids – a group of school-aged kids who spend a few hours at a ranch in Buda each Thursday with Little America Miniature Horses.
The program, organized by Lauren Greaves, began when Greaves was in high school. She returned after graduating from Texas A&M this year to continue the program. Her father, Tony, ran Thursday Kids while his daughter was off at school. The Greaves family provides its 170 miniature horses free to Thursday Kids families.
Kids like Kameron, who is legally blind, learn about the horses by feeding, cleaning and brushing them.
Kameron cannot play team sports because of his eyesight. His father, Pete Welma, believes working with the horses has built his son’s self-confidence.
In an interview with the Fort Worth Star Telgram, Welma said, “Having a commitment one day a week to clean stalls, brush and clean the horses and practice showing has taught him a lot about responsibility. It has been incredible for all the kids.”

FELAN
Hays High cadet excels in national rifle championship
Hays High School senior, Cadet Major Erica Felan scored 1152 points out of a possible 1300 during the Marine Corps JROTC Air Rifle Service Championship event last week in Anniston, Alabama.
This Olympic-style shooting event requires the competitors to fire air rifles at a bulls-eye target located 33 feet away from them. They fire 20 “scoring” shots in each of three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. Rifle marksmanship, especially at this level of competition, is a sport that requires an extremely high degree of discipline and concentration, placing a pellet that is 3/8 of an inch in diameter into the center of a bulls-eye that is only 1 3/8 inches wide.
Erica’s performance earned her an invitation to compete in the All-Service JROTC Championship for the Civilian Marksmanship to be held next month.
