The Texas State womens basketball team won its third straight game Wednesday night, beating Houston Baptist, 86-61 at Strahan Coliseum. The win improved the Bobcats’ record to 7-4 on the year.
The Bobcats took early control of the game in the first half going on a 14-0 run. During the stretch, Kelsey Krupa and Demi Clinch combined for three straight three-pointers, putting Texas State up 17-3.
Kaylan Martin had the highlight play of the first half, intercepting a pass and turning on the jets on the other end for a fastbreak layup, to give Texas State a 41-18 lead at the time. Martin finished the game with seven points and two steals to go with three assists.
Texas State was able to take a 44-24 lead into halftime. One of the big reasons for the Bobcats’ lead their commanding lead in the turnover battle, forcing 12 while giving up only four in the first half.
Verinus Kalu kept the Bobcats’ surge going in the second half, scoring nine of her 11 points in the second half. She had three steals in the first five minutes of the second period to push the Bobcat advantage to 58-31 at the 15:32 mark.
Diamond Ford got in on the offensive act in the second half, starting out slashing to the rim with ease, enabling her to score 18 of her game-high 25 points after halftime. She also showed her range, going 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Texas State finished with four players in double digits, including Ashley Ezeh who was two rebounds shy of another double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Bobcats open Southland Conference play Saturday at Strahan Coliseum when they take on Northwestern State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. On January 14, Texas State will play its first conference road game in Lake Charles where the Bobcats will play McNeese State in a game scheduled to tipoff at 1 p.m.
