STAFF REPORT
Austin Community College and Community Action of Hays, Caldwell and Blanco counties have designed a class to help prepare students for the GED and college-level training in the medical field. An information session will be held at the San Marcos Public Library on Thursday, January 5 from 6-8 p.m.
This program of classes includes 15 weeks of GED instruction based on content from ACC’s Health Science classes. Counseling, mentoring, tutoring and advising are offered to help students transition successfully into medical training programs.
A Texas Workforce Solutions counselor will provide guidance in career connection as well as help in applying to ACC, getting financial aid, and registering for classes in health-related fields. Participants will also earn CPR and First Aid certifications.
Students must complete a 15-20 minute interview, maintain a minimum 75 percent attendance rate in classes, and participate in all pre and post-testing.
Students will be assessed to ensure they have the adequate reading, writing and math skills. Classes are 12 hours per week, plus homework assignments.
Upon completion of the program, students will receive $150 and a $200 voucher for enrollment in ACC classes. The college entrance exam fee will also be waived. Classes start in February. Contact Kelly Lochman at 512-392-1161, ext. 319 for further information.
