It takes a village

Mt. City Montage

by PAULINE TOM

Firecrackers on Martin Luther King Day Eve frightened Sheba, the dog next door, to the point she broke free from her invisible fence. On that afternoon, she did not come through our doggie door. Rather, she ran away. Sheba was found, alive and well, three miles away.

Here’s the story from Mika:

Sheba went missing on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 15 and I put out the lost dog report on Monday. She turned up on the Michaelis Ranch on FM 150 about 3.5 miles away by car, only about a mile as the crow flies, but definitely through coyote country.

I think she showed up at their place on Monday and they put out a sign, which our neighbor Leslie Burich called about and realized it was Sheba. Leslie called me so Michael and I went to retrieve her Tuesday afternoon, which made for some very happy little first graders and a delighted middle schooler when they got home from school that day. We were all very worried that Sheba had been prey for the coyotes, so we were just so grateful to get her back.

An Axis deer gave birth to a fawn in our backyard last week. They breed year-round, so it’s no wonder that they’ve become so abundant in Mountain City. I need tidbits year round. Please send to [email protected] or phone 512-268-5678.
