The January 11, 2012 the sports headline was that Lehman High School Coach and Athletic Director Steve Davis was asked to resign. My question is simply, “Is winning everything?” I have lived in Hays County over 30 years. The events surrounding the resignation saddens me and it should all Hays County parents and teachers. Coach Steve Davis is not only a fine Coach but a very good man. No, you never hear his name mentioned in the paper except to tell you a sports story of some kind. But Coach Davis is a family man and a good Christian. Maybe the football scores did not reflect the real winner he is,but Coach Steve Davis is and has been a winner for Hays County and Lehman High School. Any child would be proud to play football for Coach Davis. Our parents should also feel safe allowing their child to be in a sports program under Coach Davis.
If we reflect back the six years Lehman High School has had a competing athletic program in place Coach Davis has been the head Coach. As in any athletic program getting started and competing with older programs or another High School in the same District things are very difficult. To make it even more difficult the school district did not honor the school district lines for each High School that designated which students and athletics went to the correct school in their districts. So naturally, the bigger High School (Hays) was allowed to keep the students and athletics no matter which school district they lived in. Yes, the questions were raised time and time again, but nothing was ever done to make sure correct policy was followed. Until recently the athletic budgets were less at Lehman too. No, all things have not been equal.
What the article should have said was that Coach Steve Davis was fired by the School District because his athletic programs did not win football games even though all things were not equal. Yes, the School District and Superintendent knew they were not equal. It no longer matters how you play the game, but simply “did you win or lose?” In this case Hays County and the School District lost more than just a good Coach and family man that lived by example, but lost many of us that have supported the District long after our children have graduated and moved on. In our School District, winning is not everything, it is the only thing!
Coach Davis and I are not related.
