Treasures of the Texas coast art contest... A campaign to keep Texas beaches clean

Eleven-year-old Gabrielle Wenske’s image of a surf shack on a Texas beach won the grand prize in the General Land Office’s 2011 Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest. “The colors in Gabrielle’s art really jumped out, and the message ‘Trashing Texas Beaches Isn’t Cool’ comes through loud and clear,” said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who picked the winning entry from the more than 6,544 entries last March. STAFF REPORT

The Texas General Land Office is hosting the 16th annual Adopt-A-Beach “Treasures of the Texas Coast” children’s art contest encouraging everyone to keep Texas beaches clean. Elementary school students, including home-schooled students, have the opportunity to win a Caribbean cruise, airline tickets, a class party at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels and a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi by entering.

March 5, 2012, is the deadline for submitting artwork illustrating that “Trashing Texas Beaches Isn’t Cool.” Ten winners will be chosen from each of the following categories: kindergarten, first and second grades; third and fourth grades; fifth grade; and sixth grade.

One grand prize winner will be chosen from the 40 winners. The grand prizewinner’s teacher also will receive two round-trip tickets from United Airlines and a seven-night Caribbean cruise courtesy of Royal Caribbean Cruises.

All 40 winners will receive a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium, two all-day passes to Schlitterbahn, two tickets to the permanent exhibit hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, prizes and a certificate of recognition from the Texas General Land office and a calendar displaying their artwork.
