Check It Out
by JAMES WILLIAMS
I was raised on a farm in the 1930s and reading was one of our primary sources of entertainment. I became a voracious reader as soon as I learned to read. I was an only child and books of fiction became my playmates.
Books can take you anywhere, from the Old West of the past to travelling the galaxies of the future. Using imagination stimulates the brain and keeps one mentally active. Unlike audio-visual media, such as movies and television, books force you to use imagination. Small eye muscles control visual focus. Unfortunately, when one grows older, muscles tend to weaken. Therefore, reading small print for a long period of time becomes difficult. The technical advances in printing have resulted in more books with large typeface. These new books make reading easier for all senior citizens. This fact is especially good for older persons, like me, who read a lot.
Finally, I would like to say a few words about the Central Texas Library System. Our participation with CTLS brings new books to our library every few months. These new books are printed with large typeface. Also, to my delight, usually included are some western stories in large typeface. Hip hip hooray for books printed with large letters and for CTLS.
Librarian’s note: The program Mr. Williams enjoys so much is CTLS’s Large Print Circuit Collection. A set of 50 large print books rotate between participating libraries, so the Buda Public Library gets 50 new large print books every four months, in addition to those the library purchases.
