The Hays cross-country teams continued their successful season with the District 27-4A meet looming on the horizon.
Competing against many teams in the Class 4A and Class 5A level, the Hays girls finished fourth overall as a team and the Rebel boys finished fifth.
“It was a pretty successful day for us as a team,” Hays head coach Cliff Buckley said. “Georgetown is a flat, fast course and usually brings a good deal of upper end competition.”
Once again ultra-talented runner Mariana Sigala showed she will be one of the favorites for the individual district title later this month, leading the Lady Rebels on the two-mile course in a time of 11 minutes, 57 seconds, which was fifth overall. Other top finishers for the Lady Rebs were Carly Hogue (12:56), Emily Crowell (13:02), Tabitha Rodriguez (13:13), Jennifer Colonnetta (13:20), and Rose Hyak (13:35).
Michael Normand led the Hays boys with a clocking of 17:00 on the 3.1-mile course, good for an 18th place individual finish. Other Rebel boys that helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish were Ryan McSpadden (17:14), Heath Agnew (17:53), Jason Peed 17:56, Tom Ayers (18:14), and Logan Lindsey (18:31).
“We still have a lot of work to do,” Buckley said. “We are in such a competitive district that we will literally need everyone running their best to try and make a push to advance to Regional championships. Sometimes our bodies are telling us we need to stop but it’s the time of year our runners need to find that little extra push to fight that feeling off a bit longer.”
Hays has one more meet, this Saturday at Vista Ridge, before the District 27-4A meet in Lockhart on Oct. 29.
“Now we need to try and visualize how we can accomplish our goals,” Buckley said. “These next two weeks will be very important for our team.”
