Vote, shop and see a free movie

On Center
by BRENDA STEWART

As much as I rue the weather changing and the threat of summer blasting through, this is an incredible time of year for farmers markets. Within a half hour drive of here we have no fewer than five full-blown markets from which to choose on any given weekend.

Our very own 150 Market is now open on Saturday afternoons and Buda’s farmers market just kicked back to life on the greenbelt downtown. San Marcos has a Tuesday afternoon market and another one on the square on Saturday mornings. Dripping  Springs and Wimberley also have Saturday morning farmers markets. Nothing beats getting out into the morning sunshine and mingling with your neighbors, shopping for healthy food and supporting the local economy. Goodness on all kinds of levels.

And you know that summer’s really just around the corner when Parks and Rec puts up the big screen and invites the whole town to the first Movie in the Park. This Friday night they will be showing “Tangled” a lighthearted take on the Brothers Grimm’s story, Rapunsel, beginning just after sundown in Gregg-Clarke Park. So grab your kids and a blanket and kick back and watch a fun movie under the stars.

Then, for goodness sakes, get up on Saturday and head to the polls. Although turnout in early voting has been slow, this is an incredibly important election. Our mayor, Lucy Johnson, as well as councilmembers Selbera and Wilson are up for re-election and this is your opportunity to choose the folks who are going to represent you on the council and guide our city in the future.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, local politics is one place where your voice can be heard and your vote actually counts. Every vote. If you missed the questionnaire responses in last week’s paper you can log on to haysfreepress.com and click on the “Kyle” tab for an indication of the candidates’ opinions about local government and the future of Kyle.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. so, depending on where you live, you’ll be voting at the Performing Arts Center (District 4) or Fire Station #2 (District 6) or Kyle City Hall (District 2). Taking five minutes out of your day shouldn’t be too much to expect. It’s important. Vote.
