Odds & Ends

Well, it’s been a while. Thanks for the phone calls asking if all was well. No, not as well as we would like for things to be, but grateful we are both up and about, and so many helping hands to make everything a lot easier.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of Mrs. Hotopp (Cindy) in the death of her mother, who suffered a fall and developed complications with the surgery of skin grafts needed for severe burns she received while lying on the hot pavement. Her stepfather, Walt Walters, also passed away during this time. Thanks to Rev. Richard Zieher for filling in for Rev. Roger Hotopp during Sunday morning worship at St. John Lutheran Church.

From all reports, the Claiborne Kyle Log House chicken fry was a success. Many members and friends attended, bringing all the delicious side dishes to go with the chicken. Even though Ray and I could not attend, Meals on Wheels brought several plates of the chicken side dishes and desserts. Thanks to all and Danny and Beverly Kleen for the delivery.
Looks like all chances for rain always bypass us. Reports of the ground cracking, causing the water pipes to break, thus a lot of water is lost. Guess we need to go back to the “bath on Saturday only” like years ago if we needed it or not.

Kenneth says the Men’s Fellowship is busy getting the signs ready for the Harvest Festival to be held Oct. 15 at the Uhland Community Center. The Women’s Guild of St. John Uhland Lutheran Church will have a meeting on Saturday, Oct. 1, to make final plans for the Harvest Festival. Come at noon, bring a light lunch dish to share and join in the final plans. There will be an outside garage sale, silent auction, bake sale, and country store, childrens games, cake walk and, of course, the turkey and dressing meal. This event starts at 8 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m. The serving of the turkey and dressing will start at 11 a.m. Other events also include a raffle and booths, with too many items to mention. So come early, stay late, regardless when you can; all are welcome.

A tragic house fire was prevented when a quick-thinking person stopped, grabbed a water house and started fighting the fire. More help came and the house received only some damage to the outside. Thanks to all who responded including several fire trucks and firemen. According to reports, it was caused by electric connections.

I was surprised to see so many cotton bales along Highway 21 and FM 2720 and in the fields toward San Marcos and Lockhart. Glad to see that some farmers made at least one crop, after the disaster of the corn and maize. Now if we could get a good rain that would help the ranchers and the hay growers, as well as the gardeners. There would be many a smile and less worry.

Erwin and Bobby Jean Hagedorn stopped after church Sunday to visit and bring some fliers for the Harvest Festival. Thanks, enjoyed the visit. The Hagedorns also visited with Mollie Wranitzky and Jean Collier last week. Also visiting with the Heidemans on Sunday were Ellie Schawe and Adelene Wisian. Enjoyed pictures of some kin folk in California. They have gotten older too. Needed help in identifying them.

Good to hear Dorothy and Morris of Wimberley are doing OK again. Kenneth Schnautz also missed the column, as did others. It would help if people would call to report some news. I did appreciate the calls to say they missed the column. I will try to do better – maybe make up some news?
