Empty Bowls filled at Hays tomorrow
The Hays High School Art Club hosts its “Empty Bowls” event this Thursday, Dec. 1, 6-8:30 p.m., in the Hays High School cafeteria. The community is invited to help fight hunger by purchasing a handmade ceramic bowl ($10 minimum) that will be filled with pasta or soup provided by local businesses and HHS staff. Paper bowls will also be available for $5 or $3. Hays High students will provide entertainment. Proceeds benefit the Hays County Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul. Chapa, Simon, Wallace band concert set
The band programs of Chapa, Simon and Wallace middle schools will all be on stage and offering their holiday best at the Friday, Dec. 2, Winter Concert at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. The Chapa Sixth Grade Band opens the evening at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Cougar Symphonic Band, then Wind Ensemble. Wallace follows with, in order, its Sixth Grade Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. Simon’s Sixth Grade Band and Symphonic Band close the show. Each school’s performance is set to last about 45 minutes. Admission is, as always, free and the public is cordially invited to enjoy the holiday music.
Blanco Vista hosts Santa, craft bazaar
Blanco Vista Elementary School hosts a breakfast with Santa and a Christmas Bazaar this Saturday, Dec. 3, 8-11 a.m. Vendors with arts and crafts items are invited to participate, with a nominal fee of $10 for a reserved slot at the event. One Act Play contest Saturday
Hays CISD’s annual Middle School One Act Play Contest is set for this Saturday, Dec. 3. Doors open at 1 p.m. with shows beginning at 1:30 p.m. – with performances on the hour – at the Performing Arts Center. Admission to the always-entertaining event is $5 and entitles ticket-bearers to see all five of the district’s middle schools perform their one act plays. That line-up includes Simon Middle School theater students performing “Mother Hicks,” Wallace Middle School students offering “Goodbye to the Clown,” and Chapa Middle School performing “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Completing the day’s showings are Dahlstrom Middle School’s “Shadowlight” and Barton Middle School’s “Candid.”
Hays, Dahlstrom choirs perform holiday show
The Hays High School and Dahlstrom Middle School choirs will perform songs of the season in concert Monday, Dec. 5, at the Performing Arts Center. Mustangs Director Tanna Bills will open the evening at 6:30 p.m. with the DMS Sixth Grade Choir, to be followed by the Bel Canto, Mustang Men and Chorale. A number of student solos and ensembles will perform as choirs take and leave the stage and the entire choir will sing a finale.
Hays High School Director Charles Flores will, in order, feature his Men’s Choir, Treble Choir, Varsity Women and Chamber Singers. Flores promises musical selections “from Let it Snow to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.” The combined concert is free and open to the public.
LHS Choir Winter Concert Tuesday
The choirs of Lehman High School, under the guidance of Director Daniel Arredondo, will perform their Winter Concert next Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. in the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. Arredondo says his students will offer music bringing back old memories and begin new ones – with the classics, as well as innovative music. It will be the largest group of Lehman choir students to appear on stage. Admission is free.
Lobo Mariachi Winter Concert and dinner
The Lehman High School Mariachi Winter Concert and fundraiser is set for next Tuesday, Dec. 6. A $4 dinner is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and the evening’s concert starts at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Lehman High School cafetorium. The dinner includes crispy tacos, rice, beans, garnish and tea, and a “Sweet Shop” will sell baked goods. The concert features mariachi students from Simon, Wallace and Chapa middle schools, as well as Lehman High School.
Rebel Project Graduation Christmas Bazaar set
The Hays High School Project Graduation Christmas Bazaar is set for Saturday, Dec. 10. Vendors are being sought to sell Christmas holiday items at the bazaar. For those not familiar with Project Graduation, it’s a committee created to raise funds for a safe, sober graduation night for (in this case) Hays High School graduating seniors. Lehman High School also has a Project Graduation and both will be fundraising during the coming months.
Lehman Band Winter Concert next week
The Lehman High School Band Winter Concert is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8, 7 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center. Admission to this holiday event is free and those taking it in will arrive at the PAC to find the Lehman Jazz Ensemble playing in the foyer. The concert in the auditorium begins at 7 p.m. with the Johnnie Green-directed Concert Band, followed by the Chris Barrera-directed Symphonic Band. Director Joey Lucita leads the Lehman Wind Ensemble to close the show.
Live Oak Academy hosts garage sale
The Live Oak Academy PTSA hosts its second annual garage sale Saturday, Dec. 10. The school is accepting donations including gently used clothes, furniture, household items, toys, athletic equipment and other sellable items. Donations may be dropped at the school off starting Monday, December 5, the campus located at 4820 Jack C. Hays Trail, just south of the Hays High School campus. Booths may be purchased for $10 for those wanting to use the event for their own mini-garage sale. Annual winter follies set
One of Hays CISD’s favorite holiday traditions is coming over the horizon with the upcoming Winter Band Follies, set for Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Performing Arts Center. Dahlstrom Middle School takes the stage first with a 1:30 p.m. start time. The Mustangs’ Sixth Grade Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform in that order. The Barton Bobcats take the stage at 3:30 p.m. with their Sixth Grade Band, followed, in order, by their Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. The Hays High School contingent takes the stage at 5:45 p.m. with its Symphonic Band II, followed by the Symphonic Band I. The Rebels’ Wind Ensemble highlights the show’s conclusion with an expected 6:40 p.m. curtain time.
Barton choir concert set
The Barton Middle School choirs will perform in concert Monday, Dec. 12, 6:30 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center. Director Katherine Moore reports that the program will include the Bobcats’ Sixth Grade Choir, JV Treble Choir, Men’s Choir and Varsity Treble Choir. Admission , as always, is free and the public is cordially invited to enjoy the music.
