Learning languages at the library

On Center
by BRENDA STEWART

It was nice, Sunday night, sitting on the Free Press front porch, smiling at the cars making their way home down Center Street. It had been a while since I had just kicked back and enjoyed downtown. As always, it was shuttered tight except for Hitter’s, and everybody going in and coming out looked happy. Sunday night burgers and beer.

I passed the square a couple of times on Saturday and it looked like it was rocking with the Earth Day Fair going on. It’s festival season so watch the calendar. The farmers markets all around us are in full swing so, skip the produce department and grab some locally grown fruit and veggies (and cheese and eggs and meat, for that matter). I’ve heard that the 150 Market is great. It’s just out FM 150 a bit west of downtown, so gather your bags and empty egg cartons and head out there at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Speaking of things that are good for you, from the studies I’ve read, speaking at least two languages not only gives you higher earning capacity, it rounds out your brain and staves off Alzheimer’s to boot. And the folks at the Kyle Library seem to be more than willing to help us with that endeavor. These guys are offering French classes on Monday and Tuesday evening and Spanish classes on Tuesday and Thursday morning and English as a second language class every Saturday morning and even bi-lingual and American Sign Language storytimes for the kiddos. Ooh la la. Buenos dias, amigos.
