Tech Showcase tonight at PAC

The Hays CISD Technology Showcase 2011, I<3 IT! is set for tonight, Wednesday, May 18, 6-8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. It is the sixth annual staging of the constantly growing event, deigned to allow teachers and students the opportunity to share with the community, fellow teachers, and students  the “out of this world” technology projects that are happening in the district.


Lobo Band Spring Concert Friday

The Lehman High School Band is set for its Spring Concert this Friday, May 20, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and features the Lobo Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble.


Hays, Barton choirs sing Monday

The Hays High School and Barton Middle School choirs perform next Tuesday, May 24, at their Spring Concert in the Performing Arts Center. The Bobcats sing at 6:30 p.m. and the Rebels perform at 8 p.m. Hays High School Choir Director Nancy Cavendish says choir members are “working on some music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, adding that after UIL competition, “we are trying to cram in a little fun music in the midst of TAKS, AP testing, and other senior activities.”


Ranger, Cougar Wolverine Bands perform

Bands from Chapa, Simon and Wallace middle schools will perform in a Spring Concert next Tuesday, May 24, at the Performing Arts Center. Start time for the evening program – free to the public – is set for 6 p.m.  Scheduled to perform are all three schools’ sixth grade bands, Simon Middle School Symphonic Band, and the Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles from both Chapa and Wallace Middle School. The scheduled order of performances brings Simon to the stage to open the program, followed by Wallace and, to close the program, Chapa.


Barton bands excel at festival

The Barton Middle School Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band continued to draw 2011 accolades recently as they competed in the Texas Music Festival at Austin’s Anderson High School. Director B.J. Sayger reports both bands received superior ratings, both earned “Best Band” awards in their respective classifications, and the Barton Wind Ensemble was named “Grand Champion Band” for the festival.


Last shot clinic next Wednesday

The last of the Hays County Health Department-sponsored vaccine clinics at Hays CISD middle schools is set for Simon Middle School next Wednesday, May 25. The clinic will operate from 9 a.m.-noon. The $10 cost covers all required vaccines and vaccination forms are available from school nurses. The district encourages all children to see their regular healthcare provider when possible and to get vaccinations early to be ready for the next school year.


Blood drive successful

The Lehman High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter pulled off a successful blood drive last week. Sponsor Wendy Bergstrom reports 59 registrations, 50 of whom actually donated. Bergstrom sends along thanks to all the staff and students who were able to take part. The HOSA chapter also thanks the Lobo student council, Erin Powell and Karin Prado for registration completion and teachers allowing student to come to the drive. “By doing so, you also helped save a life,” Bergstrom says.

Marrow drive also a winner

The Hays High School HOSA chapter has been active of late as well, having recently hosted the Bone Marrow Registry Drive for Simon Middle School student Miriah Pinales (Hays Free Press, April 27). Hays HOSA sponsor April Wheeler reports 98 potential donors registered for the potentially life-saving drive.
