Walking a century of memories

by WYNETTE BARTON

The pathway leading to the door of Kyle’s new library, now under construction at Meyer and Scott streets, will give future generations a reminder of who lived here before them. According to the Friends of the Kyle Library, the courtyard entrance will be lined with engraved bricks carrying the names of people, families and businesses that are, or have been, a part of the town’s history.

The bricks are not just for today, say the Friends.  Imagine your grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or distant cousins visiting the library 50 to 100 years from now and finding family names engraved in this walkway of history. Whether you have a 5-year or 100-year history with Kyle, you have been a part of its life, and it has been a part of yours.

Each brick may have a total of four lines with 15 letters per line. It may simply have names, “John and Frances Mercer” or “The Mercer Family - John, Frances, Alice, John Jr., Ann”. More information may be included (“John Mercer, 1940 – 2005, Kyle Mayor  1983 -1987”).  Memorial bricks may carry the name of the honored person and the donors. (In memory of our father, John Mercer, 1940 – 2005. John, Alice, Ann) Dates are suggested when appropriate.

The cost of each brick is $100, with engraving included in this price. Military insignias are available, and emblems from any organization may be included if a  picture of the emblem is provided.  The full $100 cost is considered a charitable contribution and is tax deductible.

Order forms and more information about the brick project brick are available at the library (268-7411) and at the Library Thrift shop at Front and Lockhart streets (268-1036). Forms are also available at the Hays Free Press office on Center Street in Kyle.
