Odds & Ends, Aug. 17, 2011

There was a little excitement in the community last week when the news came on TV about a drug bust on Highway 21 and Gristmill Road. Telephone callers wondering where on Gristmill Road it happened, were told it happened several days before and not on Gristmill. The culprits were stopped on Highway 21 and Gristmill and managed to escape. They were apprehended on FM 2720, for which we are grateful.

A similar incident happened in the early 1970s on what is now Bunton Lane. Raymond Heideman was on his way to Kyle when he encountered a large “pile” of something in the middle of the road. As he came closer he saw a pile of bags of cabbage. After stopping, he saw many bales of something, which he discovered was marijuana. Several motorists and the police arrived. After the investigation was completed the “onlookers” were told to take all the cabbage they wanted. Several pickups and car trunks were filled. Comments were heard later, “that was the best tasting sauerkraut that they had ever eaten!” We never heard whether the truck or drivers were ever caught. Just a little story from a community where very little excitement happens.

It was an exciting time for Kenneth Schnautz on Sunday, Aug. 14, when his sons, Dawson, Doug, Kevin and daughter Krisyln and their families honored him on his 70th birthday at Lockhart State Park. A host of relatives and friends enjoyed visiting, getting reacquainted and the good meal. Here’s wishing you many more healthy birthdays, Kenneth.

Speaking of meals, the Dennis Heideman family shared a spaghetti supper with Opa and Oma last Friday evening. Everything was delicious including the crispy apple pie that Maddy baked.

Other visitors this past week were Adelene Wisian, Ellie Schawe, Kenneth Schnautz, Mike, Debbie and Cooper Moore, Terry Kleen and Daniel and Sharon Heideman. Some came not only for a visit, but to do chores. Thanks to all. Coming from Belton were Pauline and Herbert Schwertfeger. Pauline found a picture of our Uncle Hugo Stuenkel, who was a soldier in Germany and France during WWI. He will be added to our Wall of Honor. There are still a few from this area missing that we would like to include. It’s not too late; there is still plenty of room.

I have been thinking I should not write this column anymore, as I make so many mistakes, but then I think, if I did quit, the White-Out company may have to go out of business. So I guess I will continue, as I have met so many interesting people who read this column. For instance, Mary who I met while getting a hair cut last week in Kyle. She asked where my little pink cap was (Free Press).
