Summertime and the living is...hot

On Center

by BRENDA STEWART

From what I was recently told, “September is the new August” and I need to quit hoping that summer’s going to be over any time soon. I think I’d be okay if it would just rain. I’ve started being extraordinarily friendly to folks with swimming pools and lake houses and have begun to mark movie opening dates on my calendar so I can go hide in the cool dark for a couple of hours with a new flick. It’s beating me down and making me perpetually sleepy.

Looking over the August schedule for the Kyle Public Library makes me really feel like a slacker. By the end of the month they are planning a host of classes from early morning until after dark. Continuing their basic conversational Spanish classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, by mid-month ESL classes will fire up again and library staff will begin a week-long job searching computer class, citizenship classes, separate Spanish and English basic computer classes as well as an intermediate computer class. For the kiddos, they have story times in several languages and gaming time for the older guys. Drop by the library or check out the website for more info.

Then on Saturday, Kyle Market Days will be waking up the square with the music of The Bruce Curtis Band opening the morning at 9 a.m. From what I read, these guys are retired military singing the likes of Hank Sr., Merle, Elvis, Conway and Cash. Then, The Georges, a four-piece rockabilly band from San Marcos will entertain with dance music ranging from early country to the Fab Four, taking the pavilion stage at noon. Add to that delicious food, cool arts and crafts and a whole park full of neighbors and you just can’t miss. On Sunday, head on over the the Claiborne Kyle Log House and take a trip back in time. Tours start at 2 p.m.
