Few details on train fire
Union Pacific railroad is saying little about a train that passed through Buda and Kyle Sunday afternoon, pulled by a locomotive that witnesses described as being on fire.
Huge billows of black smoke poured from the roof of one of the locomotives as the freight train crept through town at about 2:30 p.m. It was later spotted in San Marcos.
Asked about the incident, a spokesperson for the train company said, “We had a locomotive on a Union Pacific freight train that had mechanical problems. The problem caused smoke to emanate from the locomotive. We shut the locomotive down and replaced it with another locomotive.”
The spokesperson, Aaron Hunt, said the cause of the “mechanical problem” had not been determined.
Kyle Police investigate thefts
A Bobcat skid-steer loader was reportedly stolen from a Kyle construction site Friday night, police say.
Thieves took the piece of machinery, valued around $10,000, from the site in the 100 block of Center Street sometime between 6 and 9:30 p.m.
Police also say that more than $500 was stolen from Chapa Middle School on June 2. School officials told police that cash and checks, totaling $506, was taken from the school’s band room.
There have been no leads or arrests in either case.
