STAFF REPORTS

Being among the “best” doesn’t come easy for most of us. For Lehman High School senior Cory Bergstrom, the task has apparently become a bit easier, as he’s recently been named “Outstanding Health Science Technology Student Winner” in the Best of Texas awards ceremony hosted by the Texas Career and Technology Council.

The program’s purpose is “to recognize senior career and technical education students, alumni and community members who are doing an outstanding job worthy of recognition.”

Bergstrom’s nomination stated that he “performs well in all classes and thrives in advanced placement and dual credit college courses.” His physical therapy mentor described his knowledge of the subject matter as being “at the level of a graduate student.”

The standout Lobo qualified for his current advanced course, Problems and Solutions-Medical Internship, after taking two years of sports medicine under Andi Green, the Lobos’ athletic trainer. Bergstrom and eight others joined in the first such internship class at Lehman High School. His mother, Wendy Bergstrom, is the instructor for the course and she describes the class as “a great group” and calls the time with them “an exciting experience.”

Bergstrom and his classmates were paired with a mentor in their chosen medical field and then spent approximately 1.5 hours a day, three days a week, learning about the profession. Physical Therapist Kevin Walker, who works at Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center in Kyle, served as Bergstrom’s mentor.

Bergstrom’s senior year continues to be a challenge, even in its closing weeks, as he’s maintaining his work in Anatomy and Physiology, part of the district’s Health Science curriculum. He will graduate with his Pharmacy Technology license and attend Oklahoma State University next fall.
