Hays Criminal Justice team nabs honors
Hays High School Criminal Justice students had a solid showing at the Skills USA State competition in Corpus Christi recently. The effort was highlighted by Sharon Klingemann’s first place State Superior ribbon win for her innovative project. Sponsor Jeanne Morris reported that Christian Thompson placed fourth in Firefighting and Chris Snoeberger and Raymond Hays took sixth in Felony Traffic Stop as well. Morris says, “All of the students who competed at State did an amazing job!”
Project Grad Bazaar Friday
Hays High School Project Graduation 2011 invites the public to its Spring Bazaar this Friday, May 5, 5-8 p.m., in the high school cafeteria. The event is designed to highlight local businesses and give individuals a place to sell a wide range of products. Proceeds from booth sales will be dedicated to this year’s Hays High School Project Graduation celebration.
Art around the world
A pair of summer art camps will be offered at Lehman High School, the sessions set for 8 a.m.-noon, June 6-10 and June 13-17. Lehman Art Department chair Debra Flynn oversees the camps and says the first week is titled “A Week at Universal Studios,” featuring painting, drawing, animation, clay, sculpture and printmaking. The second week is “A Year of Holiday Traditions from Around the World,” and daily themes include Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos and Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day, as well dragons for Chinese New Year and masks for Mardi Gras. Cost for one week is $70, or $50 for a second week or second student. Registration is limited to 25 students. For more information or to register, contact Flynn at [email protected] or call 268-8454.
Mini Cheer Camp set
Lehman High School will host Lobo Mini Cheer Camp this summer, July 26-29, from 8 a.m.to noon. Registration for students in kindergarten through eighth grade is $50. A performance will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the final day and campers will earn the right to perform at a Lobo varsity game. For registration and more information, contact Lobo varsity cheerleader sponsor Stacy Martinez at [email protected] or call 268-8454.
Hays CIS gets yoga donation
Hays High School Communities in School (CIS) Program Manager Bonnie Hernandez reports a recent act of thoughtful generosity from the community. Buda Yoga owner Kelly Givens started a low-cost class at Hays High for campus teachers, but also to generate funds for CIS. She designated a portion of the registration fees for the campus CIS and recently donated more than $100 to the office. Hernandez termed the donation “a great expression of generosity.”
Loving our Mother Earth
Several Hays CISD campuses joined with others worldwide celebrating Earth Week in April. Dahlstrom science teacher Frances Norman describes the Mustangs’ Magazine Tower Contest, with 7th grade winning with stacks totaling 45 feet. “No Tech Tuesday” asked students not to watch TV or use electronic devices for the day – or week – if they could. “No Waste Wednesday” encouraged students bringing lunches to carry them in reusable containers. And on Earth Day, students wore green and recycled plastic bottles – and a “100 feet” of stacked magazines.
At Carpenter Hill, Ann Marie Sheely shared the week’s schedule which included a “Re-Use a Shoe Drive,” “Recycled Art Projects” (the library was full of incredible entries – and winners – at week’s end), the “Grocery Bag Project” which put student-decorated paper sacks at Buda HEB (Kyle’s HEB Plus cooperated with other district campuses on this project), “Waste Free Lunch Day,” and “Adopt a Plant Day.”
‘Celebrate Hays Day’
Hays High School students brought back an old tradition last Friday: “Celebrate Hays Day.” Rebel Principal David Pierce said, “the idea is for the students to blow off some steam after a week of TAKS testing and do something positive. Our kids did a really good job with the testing and they deserved a little thanks for their efforts and hard work.” Pierce and his staff joined the students at the stadium for an extended lunch with fund-raising booths, pie-throwing, and a book donation for students in Jamaica.
Lobos hit perfect note
It’s been called to our attention that in a further enhancement of the recent story on our local high school choirs’ successful showing in UIL competition, the Lehman High School choirs were one of only two Central Texas schools (Pflugerville being the other) to score a full sweep of 24 first division ratings from their 24 judges. Not to drop names, but the keen Central Texas competition includes perennial powerhouse programs from Westlake, Bowie, McCallum and Anderson high schools.
