They are among the region’s biggest industries and most lucrative developments. Between them, they pay millions of dollars in taxes to fund the local school district’s operations year in and year out.
Here’s a rundown of the top 10 taxpayers in Hays CISD, listed by total market value according to the Hays Central Appraisal District.
The dollar amount includes real property such as land and structures, as well as inventory, equipment and other personal property.
Interestingly, three of the school district’s top taxpayers – C-Fan, Goodrich and Vista del Blanco, owner of the planned Blanco Riverwalk development – are found not in Buda or Kyle but on the northern edge of San Marcos.
$61.3 million Built more than three decades ago, the Texas Lehigh Cement Co. plant in Buda employs more than 160 people and has the capacity to produce more than a million tons of cement for construction, oil wells and masonry every year.
$53.7 million With 500 employees, C-Fan Co. of San Marcos manufactures composite jet engine fan blades.
$48.7 million Headquartered in Houston, the Goodrich Corp. maintains this aerospace structures facility next door to C-Fan.
$36.5 million Less than five years old and only partially developed, the Kyle Marketplace shopping center sits on more than 35 acres at the heavily traveled intersection of FM 1626 and Interstate 35.
$32.8 million The outdoors outfitter Cabela’s boasts a 185,000-square-foot showroom featuring animal displays and huge aquariums at its retail store in Buda.
$23.3 million The Pedernales Electric Cooperative maintains a vast network of transmission lines and substations throughout the area.
$21.7 million The 240-acre Blanco Riverwalk, a planned development south of Yarrington Road, was conceived more than five years ago as a high-end, mixed-use property, but now it’s being rethought as a possible site for high-density residential growth in San Marcos.
$20.5 million The Walmart Supercenter in Buda is one of northern Hays County’s busiest retailers, pumping sales tax dollars into Buda.
$14.3 million Founded in the 1950s, Centex Materials produces road base, rock, sand and, to a lesser extent, ready-mix cement. The Buda facility employs 17 people.
$10.4 million Seton Medical Center Hays is a nonprofit institution, but the land being developed around it is worth millions for Austin-based SCC Kyle Partners.
