Hays Offense: Spread
Hays Defense: 3-4
Alamo Heights Offense: Spread
Alamo Heights Defense: 3-4
Players To Watch: Hays – QB Caleb Kimbro, Slot Receiver Michael Romero, Slot receiver Taven Mayberry, WR Mason Cervenka, WR Granger Studdard, WR Trevor Ragsdale, C Boone Feldt, LB Dalton Johnson, LB Mark Oldham, DE Kyle Cox, NG Kyle Williams, CB Christian Rodriguez, CB Jared Rodriguez
Players To Watch: Alamo Heights – QB Wes Yancy, QB Dub Yarbrough, RB Coby Bailey, WR Garrett Iverson, WR Truman Biggs, WR Robert Schuler, LB Skyler Nelson, LB Blake Klumpp, DB Blake Rosenthal
Intangibles: Hays must put the thrill of last week’s comeback win over rival Lehman behind it quickly as this district’s road never gets easy. Alamo Heights may not be the team that won 10 games and was a regional semifinalist last season. The Mules lost 12 starters from that squad, including star quarterback Steven Elder. In fact, Alamo Heights’ play has mirrored Hays’ so far this season. The Mules have looked great at times and inconsistent at other times, and as a result have a 3-2 overall record. If Hays can find a way to pressure and contain Alamo Heights’ QB duo of Wes Yancy (516 passing yards, 186 rushing) and Dub Yarbrough (420 passing, 120 rushing) with its front seven then the Rebels should improve to 2-0 in district play. If Alamo Heights’ receivers are allowed to roam free in the secondary, Hays could be in for another shootout where it’s anyone’s ballgame late.
Free Press Prediction: Hays 35, Alamo Heights 21
LEHMAN AT CANYON
When: Friday 7:30 p.m.
Where: Canyon High School
Records: Lehman 4-1 (0-1 27-4A), Canyon 4-1 (0-1)
Last Meeting: Canyon 42, Lehman 7 (2010)
Last Week: Hays 28, Lehman 27; Smithson Valley 30, Canyon 3
What they’re saying: “The Hays game was hard fought but it’s over with. I feel like we outplayed them to be honest with you. We have to put that game behind us and the best way to do it is to go back to work and get ready for Canyon.” – Lehman head coach Steve Davis
Lehman Offense: Multiple
Lehman Defense: 4-3
Canyon Offense: Power-I
Canyon Defense: 3-3 Stack
Players To Watch: Lehman – QB Matt Anguiano, WR/DE Matt Riojas, RB Levi Medley, LB Charles Williams, WR Jaylon Hardaway, OL Kenny Higgins, OL/LB Ethan Martin, TE Julio Besa, RB Matt Zamora, DL Kris Hernandez, DL Edwin Bahena, CB Bradley Braxton, CB Kyron Morrisette, FS Lawrence Romero
Players To Watch: Canyon – FB Tanner Hill, RB Skyler Nelson, RB Austin Day, LB Dakota Billings, OL Jacob Smith, OL Michael Warmke
Intangibles: Lehman will have to rebound quickly from the toughest gridiron loss in school history last Friday night against Hays. The Lobos travel to Canyon High to play on the now-famous red turf and find a Canyon team that may be ripe for an upset following a 30-3 loss to its rival Smithson Valley in which the Cougars lost leading rusher George Williamson for the year with a knee injury. As always when you play Canyon, expect a smash-mouth football game. If the Lobos can keep Levi Medley injury free, Lehman has a real chance to come away with a win.
Free Press Prediction: Lehman 20, Canyon 14
