Mountain City Montage, Aug. 17, 2011

Remember how we  water well-watched during in the summer of 2009?
Now, the MCOWS well water sits not nearly as low as the all-time low in July 2009. By this time in 2009, rain poured. We’re one day closer to rain.

Report comes from Nancy Waddell of her already-found job in Odessa. “Personal assistant” for a little retired “oil” couple in Odessa.

Those watching our gorgeous Painted Buntings noticed that most of the males left almost overnight a couple weeks back, flying to Mexico and Central America.
South of us, in Texas, wintering Rufous Hummingbirds have flown in from Northwest USA. So, it’s probable some have already stopped in or arrived here. Keep your eyes open.
Does everyone know now to leave hummingbird feeders out and fresh all year long?  Rufous Hummingbirds winter here. It’s especially on icy days that they visit feeders. We’re one day closer to icy days.
Has anyone else experienced hummer syrup turning into a thick goop in this heat?

Special dates for Mountain City are thick on the first week in October calendar. The 3rd Annual Fire & Ice Festival postponed to October 1. And, the now-1st-Tuesday-in-October (in Texas) National Night Out falls on October 4.
Remember when we used to have NNO in August?  August 2 was the official “National” observance this year for the rest of the nation. Several years back, the official date for the Texas event postponed to October because of our heat.
Fire & Ice and NNO are entirely different events. Fire & Ice features a band and barbeque, organized games, and a silent auction. Mountain Cityians are asked to bring “Fire” (salsa) or “Ice” (ice cream)  for the tasting competition.
The NNO in Judge Beth Smith’s yard  features inflatables for the kids, ice cream treats and water,  neighbor visiting, and Emergency Service personnel available for questions.
Judge Smith sends periodic emails to her Precinct 2 distribution list, usually about safety and crime. If you want to be added, send a request to [email protected].

I forgot to tell you about a neighbor’s  great crimewatch idea. She asked neighbors to watch her house while she was out of town; asked a friend from church to water her plants and check on the house; and, she thought to write a note for the friend to carry. When I approached the stranger who drove into her driveway, he pulled out the note in her handwriting.
