Crime Briefs: 07/20/11

Police are seeking information on these two men suspected of burglarizing a Buda home and using stolen credit cards at a Target store in Austin.

Authorities seek Buda burglars
The Hays County Sheriff’s Office along with Hays County Crime Stoppers is seeking tips regarding an April home burglary in Buda and a related credit card abuse case.

On April 11 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., a home in the 1200 block of Shadow Creek Blvd. was burglarized after thieves pried open the front door. The thieves then ransacked the home stealing a TV, DVD player, stereo, Wii console and games, an Apple laptop computer, jewelry and several credit cards, authorities say.

The same day between 4:30 p.m. and 5:10 p.m., investigators say that the stolen credit cards were used to purchase $800 worth of merchandise in a Target store near Parmer Lane in Austin. Security cameras photographed the suspects who used the credit cards.

Anyone who recognizes the suspects in the photos is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-324-TIPS (8477). Tipsters could get a $1,000 reward if tips lead to the arrest and indictment of the suspect(s).

Driver charged in fatal crash

A 42-year-old Seguin man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and assault after he allegedly caused a four-vehicle crash that killed one and injured three others on Friday, police say.

Luis R. Besa was driving south on State Highway 123 near Staples Road around 5:50 p.m. when his Chevy pickup truck rear-ended a Cadillac El Dorado waiting to turn into a grocery store parking lot. The impact sent the Cadillac into incoming traffic where it was broadsided by a GMC Sonoma pickup and struck by a Hummer, investigators say.

The car caught on fire, which was extinguished by a passing truck driver. The passenger in the Cadillac, Alejandro Perez, 58, of Maxwell, was killed in the crash and the driver, Alfredo Aquino, 62, of Lockhart, was transported to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, where he remains in stable condition, a hospital official said.

Emergency crews took two additional victims from the other two vehicles to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos who have since been treated and released, police say.

On Monday, Besa was released from Hays County Jail on bonds worth $150,000, jail records show.
