Roadrunners, Hawks seek readers
Camino Real Elementary School and Hemphill Elementary School are both calling out to the community for readers to volunteer for their respective Storybook Festivals Monday, Oct. 31. For more information or to volunteer at Camino Real, write [email protected]. At Hemphill, it’s the 11th annual running of the popular event and librarian Lourdes Cervantes encourages storytellers to convey how important reading is to them. Redistricting advisory committee reviews options
The Hays CISD redistricting advisory committee is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The school district is redrawing its five single-member school board districts in response to population changes documented in the 2010 Census.

The meeting will be in the Founders Room of the district’s administrative offices, at 21003 Interstate 35 in Kyle.

Once the committee has decided on a new map, it will recommend it for school board approval.

The Hays CISD Board of Trustees is made up of five trustees who are elected from single-member districts and two trustees who are elected at-large. According to federal law, the school district’s single-member districts must be redrawn every 10 years to evenly distribute population, and they must not weaken minority voting strength.

In addition, districts should be drawn so that they contain contiguous and compact geographic areas, maintain communities of interest and minimize dividing of neighborhoods, and follow county voting precincts where feasible.
