Come downtown for coffee and parade art

On Center

by BRENDA STEWART

Well, downtown was finally hopping again with the city descending on the square to hear the rocking Lobo Band perform during their annual Market Days bar-b-cue fundraiser. These guys just get better each year. And, as their reward, the Lobo Band Boosters fired up the grills and served up some of the best bar-b-cue around. The line stretched throughout the park for the better part of the afternoon but everyone was in good spirits and grooving on the aroma coming from the pits just ahead, and the tunes of the Love Generators on stage.

And, speaking of bar-b-cue, just down the road the grills will be smoking for the Fiesta BBQ fundraising cook-off early Friday morning as the Knights of Columbus offer home cooked chicken dinners with potato salad and beans at the St. Anthony church hall all day long. Plan a picnic or just hang up your apron and let the KC do the cooking.

Also on Friday, VFW Post 12058 and the Ladies Auxiliary host a Morning Coffee and welcome local veterans and their families to stop in for a cup and some conversation. They meet at the hall on the corner of Front and Center streets every Friday at 8 a.m. The post holds its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday evening with the Auxiliary meeting on the third Thursday of the month. And just a heads up, these guys are gearing up for the 17th annual POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony and Motorcycle Ride which begins at 10 a.m. on the 17th at the hall and finishes up at Riley’s Tavern on Hunter Road. It’s a good cause, should be a nice ride and one heck of a party.

And on a very cool yet odd note, the family of P.J. Allen will be throwing open the doors to his barns this Saturday for an estate sale featuring his float and parade sculpture, figures and props. P.J. was a local who grew up in the area, served in the army, took off for New York and became a Broadway dancer and then headed on back to Kyle to become the preeminent float builder for the state of Texas. I could not make this stuff up. The barn is located next to the original homestead in downtown Kyle on Nance Street and the auction starts at 9 a.m. You’ve got to see it to believe it.
