The last time Cam and Boone Feldt were on the football field together they were teammates on Pilot Point’s 2009 Class 2A Division I state title team.
When the powerful offensive line duo left Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos that day it seemed unlikely they would ever play on the same field again, much less wear the same team uniform.
Cam was a 6-foot, 5-inch, 305-pound senior who had committed to the University of Arkansas and Boone was a sophomore with two years to go until graduation.
Fast-forward two years, and it looks like the Feldt brothers will once again be gunning for pancake blocks on the same offensive line.
Boone verbally committed to University of North Texas recently, the same school Cam transferred to in May.
“I’m really excited,” said Boone, now a 6-3, 285-pound senior at Hays High, where his father Blake took over as head football coach and athletic coordinator in March. “Cam and I both started on our state championship team at Pilot Point, and that was incredible. I was recruited by schools with better records, but Cam was my biggest recruiter and his influence went a long way toward me choosing North Texas. I also think the new coach up there is doing a great job.”
Boone, who will play center for Hays this fall, also had offers from the University of Houston, Texas State University and Louisiana Tech. In addition, he was being recruited by Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
Todd Dodge was fired as the head coach at North Texas during the middle of the season last October. He was replaced by Dan McCarney in November.
McCarney led Iowa State to five bowl games while head coach of the Cyclones from 1995-2006. He was most recently an assistant coach at the University of Florida.
North Texas has posted a 13-58 record in its previous six seasons since enjoying a four-year run of winning the Sun Belt conference from 2001-2004.
“Cam and I want to try to win a conference championship and get North Texas going to bowl games every year like it was before,” Boone said.
Blake Feldt said he’s very proud of the fact his sons will be teaming up for the Mean Green. Boone can’t officially sign with North Texas, which will be sporting a brand new stadium this season, until February.
“I think they will have a lot of fun being at the same school playing for a great coach in Dan McCarney,” Blake said. “I think it’s a good spot for Boone and I’m proud of all the hard work he’s put in to be in a position to make a decision like this.”
