Denim & Diamonds tix still available
Tickets to this year’s Denim & Diamonds gala and fundraiser, hosted by the Hays CISD Education Foundation, are on sale now for the event this Saturday, Nov. 12. Proceeds from the event provide innovative teaching grants to local classrooms, honor the district’s top graduates, celebrate annual teachers of the year, and provide professional development grants for teachers. Veterans Day programs set
A number of Hays CISD campuses host Veterans Day ceremonies this week and area veterans are encouraged to attend and be recognized. Among those campuses are Carpenter Hill Elementary and Elm Grove Elementary Thursday evening, Nov. 10, and Pfluger, Fuentes, Hemphill, Negley, Blanco Vista and Kyle elementary schools and Barton and Dahlstrom middle schools Friday, Nov. 11. Hays High School hosts its ceremony this Friday, Nov, 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the Joe Graham Gym. Lehman High School invites all veterans and active duty military members to its ceremony this Friday, Nov. 11, 3 p.m., in the Lobo gym. Sponsored by the Lehman Naval JROTC and VFW Buda/Kyle Post 12058, the event honors those in all branches of the military with the posting of colors, performances by the Lehman JROTC, choir, band, art, theater arts and journalism departments, and a message from the VFW. ‘Into the Woods’ performed at Hays High Fri. & Sat.
Hays High School Theater Department presents “Into the Woods” this weekend in the Burdine Johnson Theater. Play notes ask potential theater-goers, “An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A witch who raps? All of it leads to a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.” The production is Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Sunday, Nov. 13. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults and are available on the department’s website, nonameplayers.weebly.com.
Hornets host Fall Festival
The Tom Green Elementary School Hornets host their 2011 PTA Fall Festival this Saturday, Nov. 12, 4-8 p.m., on the school grounds. Hornet PTA President Landon Becker reports wristbands ($10, discounted for larger families) will be sold, allowing holders unlimited access to Fry’s Animal Farm, the Wiggle Waggle Train, Bounce House/Moonwalks, Cupcake Walk, Face Painting/Kids Tattoo and Hair Spray. Free to all are sack races, a tug-of-war challenge, hula hoop contest, car show, fire truck/police car viewing, and a 7 p.m. street dance. New this year are a chili cook-off, pie judging and a silent auction, all to go with a full range of concessions.
Live Oak garage sale seeks donations
The Live Oak Academy PTSA has a Saturday, Dec. 10, garage sale planned, in coordination with the Hays High School Christmas Bazaar. Reb PEP students offer holiday tamales
Hays High School PEP Program (pregnancy, education and parenting) is fundraising by offering delicious tamales for the holidays. Traditional pork, jalapeno pork, bean, and jalapeno bean varieties are available for $10/dozen (chicken available for $11.50/dozen). The deadline is Friday, Nov. 12, so order quickly from Hays HS PEP teacher Katie Campbell at [email protected] or 268-2911. Tamale pick-up is scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving.
Lobos offer Empty Bowl soup dinner
The Lehman High School Lobos cordially invite the community to join them at their “Empty Bowl Soup Dinner” next Tuesday, Nov. 15, 6-8 p.m. Participants are offered a wide range of unique, hand-made soup bowls created by students and faculty for purchase, then enjoy the Lobo Culinary Arts-prepared dinner (bread donated by Texas Pie Company)while listening to great live acoustic music from local artists JT Coldfire and friends. Live Oak forms fishing club
Live Oak Academy librarian Alex Gloria is organizing the Live Oak Academy Fishing Club for students on that campus and he’s asking the community for some help. Gloria asks that supporters take a look in their garage, storage shed, or attic and see if there are items that could be donated to help the cause. Marathon runner hosts Donation Night
Hays CISD band director Amanda Brandt, set to run in the Boston Marathon in April, will host a Donation Night at Double Dave’s Pizza in Southpark Meadows next Tuesday, Nov. 15, 6-9 p.m. The greater the sales that evening, the greater percentage the runner receives for her fund, benefitting the American Liver Foundation/Boston Marathon Run for Research. She is attempting to raise $4,000 for the charity and she notes, “Every little bit helps!”
