Buda Parks and Rec
by JACK JONES
Buda is one of just 16 Texas municipalities that were recognized recently by the Scenic City Certification Program of Scenic Texas.
Buda received Gold Certification for its parking lot landscaping; five special districts, including an historic district; strict dark sky regulations; and meeting national standards of securing at least 10 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. Of the 1,200 cities and towns in Texas, only 16 earned Scenic City designation in 2011. The Scenic City Certification recognizes the high-quality scenic standards in Buda and Buda’s 244.3 acres of parks and open spaces was a big factor in receiving the certification.
Historic Stagecoach Park is a 51 acre nature park located at 880 Main Street. The public can enjoy over two miles of crushed granite trails, lots of open parkland and a playground. Also on site is an amphitheater for educational programming as well as a council ring for Scout purposes.
The park features a windmill with water flowing into a large catch basin reminiscent of the 1800s. The park is beautiful with acres of mesquite and live oak trees and wildlife is abundant including deer. The park is equipped with restrooms, water and electricity for the pavilion. The pavilion is available for rental for family reunions, picnics, birthday parties and wedding receptions, etc. At the entrance to the park sits the Stagecoach House and Onion Creek Post Office. These two historic facilities are currently being renovated/restored and should be open to the public in December.
