Local jobless rate up slightly

STAFF REPORT

The number of people seeking unemployment benefits in Kyle ticked up a bit in September.

The city’s unemployment rate rose to 6.2 percent, compared to 6.1 percent in August and 5.5 percent in September 2010, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The statewide unemployment rate held steady at 8.5 percent last month, below the national unemployment rate of 9.1 percent.

“Texas job seekers have reason to be encouraged,” Ronny Congleton, workforce commissioner representing labor, said in a prepared statement.

“Although Texas, like the rest of the country, continues to face challenges, many industries continue to grow here, creating opportunities for those looking for work.”

On a brighter note in Kyle, the city added 84 jobs from August to September. But the labor force also grew by 118, outpacing the job gains.

Hays County’s unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent in September. That’s down from 7.5 percent in August but up from 6.8 percent in September a year ago.

The workforce commission does not report the unemployment rate for smaller cities such as Buda.
