Norma Lillian Lawler Martin (1920-2011)

Norma Lillian Lawler Martin, 91, passed away on Friday, October 21, at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House in Austin.


Norma was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 17, 1920 to Victor Frank and Lillian Lindley. At age 12, Norma moved to Houston with her father, a furniture salesman, where she attended Sam Houston High School, and she later attended the University of Texas at Austin. After college, Norma and her husband and their young daughter, Nancy, resided in Houston.


Norma was later employed by Reed Roller Bit in Houston where she met and married her long time friend and companion. She and her husband moved their family to Canyon Lake where they started the Canyon Lake Information Office and a Real Estate Business.


Norma later moved to San Antonio and was employed by Auto Convoy where she worked until retirement. After retirement, she moved to Wimberley, and more recently, to Stonebrook Senior Living in San Marcos where she resided at the time of her passing.


Norma loved life and lived it to the fullest. Her interests included her family and friends, traveling, playing bridge and dominos, and trips to casinos throughout the US.


Norma was preceded in death by her father and mother, Victor  and Lillian Lindley, her husband, Ralph Phipps; and other loved ones, Wilbur Lawler, Louis Crosson, Leonard DeFriend, Merlin Thomas and Leon Martin.


Norma is survived by her sister, Barbara Konvalinka of Fox Lake, Illinois; daughter, Nancy Starr of Bandera and sons, Woody Lawler and wife Carolyn of Buda, and Rick Lawler and wife Diane of Littleton, Colorado. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rick Starr, Debbie Yates and husband Chuck, Paul Starr, Wendy Hicks, Misty Ham and husband Ernest, Katie Lawler and Matt Lawler; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.


Funeral services were held on Saturday morning, Oct. 29 at Thomason Funeral Home. A graveside service and burial was held at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery in Houston on Saturday afternoon.


Contributions may be made to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos or Hospice Austin’s Christopher House in Austin.
