Fishing and fun

Kyle Parks & Recreation

by KERRY URBANOWICZ

What a great time of year with the ground turning from brown and lifeless to green and vibrant. This is also the time of year we set the foundation for things to come. Our next two events set the foundation for other events scheduled later this year.

The Spring Scholarship Bass Fishing Tournament at Lake Kyle is March 26. (I bet you have a couple of questions by now like: Bass fishing in Kyle? and Where is Lake Kyle?) At sunrise, Saturday, March 26, area anglers will be competing for the first fish, largest fish and most fish. The tournament is divided into four flights: men; women; over 45 and under 45 years of age. The $15 early-bird registration ends March 18, 5 p.m.; $20 registration ends March 25, 5 p.m.; and the registration fee is $25 on the day of the event. All money raised from this event sponsors the free Kid’s Fishing Clinic and Derby held the first Saturday of June. Up to 50 kids learn how to fish with the new rod and reel they receive, educational sessions they attend and tips they are taught.

Kyle Market Days debuts Saturday, April 2, and partners once again with the Kyle Lions Club’s Fajita Fiesta & BBQ Cook-Off. The Fajita Fiesta begins Friday night, April 1, at City Square Park and continues all day Saturday. Market Days will start at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with farmers, food, vendors and fun… and live music. Because of the Fajita Fiesta, the live music on Saturday goes all day with Twilight Trio at the gazebo at 9 a.m., Frank Gomez Band at 11:30 a.m. and Los Flames going on at 2 p.m. Admission is free but please bring your pocketbook as the vendors have been saving up their wares all winter for this event.

Okay, still wondering about bass fishing in Lake Kyle? Lake Kyle is the new park coming to Kyle as a result of more than $1 million in park grants. The park entrance will be on Lehman Road, across from Masonwood Drive. Plans, being developed, will give Lake Kyle the look and feel of a Texas State Park, but without paying admission. The park is more than 118 acres and the lake covers nearly 19 of those acres. The lake has two holes that measure 10 feet in depth and has a very healthy population of large-mouth bass. Park construction should be complete by the end of the year, but fishing events like the Scholarship Tournament and Kids Derby started last year.
