Hays High School’s Amy Hendrickson teaches Family and Consumer Science for the district’s Career and Technology Department and one of her favorite annual activities is the week her 130 students host pre-school youngsters for Kids’ Korner. The 22-year tradition brings young children into the Child Development Lab so high school students can get real-world experience in a classroom.
Hendrickson says this year’s version of Kids’ Korner brought the children in from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a full school week. Two different shifts of high school students came in each day, eventually providing all of them a chance to work with the children, each student working a three-hour shift.
This year’s enrollment was 15 and at mid-week, each had been in attendance and ready for a multitude of activities every day.
“The look of enjoyment mixed with fatigue that has been on all my students’ faces at the end of their shift is priceless,” Hendrickson says of the week, adding, “I know they have experienced what was meant to be experienced in working with these children!”
