Lobo junior receives national silver medal

Lehman High School junior Jeremiah Flynn has won a National Silver Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, the second such national award for the Lobos.

by JIM CULLEN

March was Youth Art Month all over Hays CISD and the rest of the nation, as student artists of all ages and the people who support them found ways to celebrate talent and vision. Perhaps the foremost of local student recognition was that being announced for Lehman High School junior Jeremiah Flynn, who has been named as a National Silver Medalist in the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest for his entry titles, “Plumber Help Us!”

Flynn was among a number of local students from both Lehman and Hays high schools who received state recognition earlier this spring and qualified for national competition. But, as was the case last year when 2010 Lobo senior Jared Rodriguez learned of his national award, Flynn is flying solo this year with the honor. A Gold Medalist last year, Rodriguez was the first local student ever nationally recognized in the Scholastic contest, so membership in the local “club” is limited.

Lobo art teacher Debra Flynn (who doubles as Jeremiah’s mother), says of the Scholastic medal win, “This is such a great honor for Lehman, as it happens only once in a blue moon.” She quantifies the feat by noting that an estimated 185,000 entries enter regional competition, from which approximately 10,000 are selected for national consideration. Ultimately, 1,500 awards are announced for art and writing entries from across the country.

The Scholastic Gold and Silver Medals come with a special two-day celebration in New York City this summer that includes workshops and tours, films at the Tribeca Institute, and an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall.
